![]() | Frontera Copper is a Canadian mining, exploration and development company whose principal activity is the production of LME Grade A copper cathode from the Piedras Verdes run-of-mine heap leach, solvent extraction -electrowinning operation in Sonora, Mexico. Commercial production began in October 2006 and reached full production capacity in May 2007. The annual rate of production capacity is 70 million pounds at an estimated average life-of-mine cash operating cost of $1.32 per pound. Commercial production for 2007 was 53.7 million pounds of LME Grade A quality cathode at a cash cost of $1.30 per pound. A total of 1,018 million pounds of copper are projected to be produced during the remaining 17-year life of the project. Existing resources and prospective exploration targets adjacent to the proposed open-pit have the potential to improve the economics and extend the life of the project. In response to a downturn in copper prices, Frontera Copper announced a temporary suspension of mining activities in November 2008. Copper production is expected to gradually decline for the duration of the mining suspension as copper is recovered from ores previously placed on leach pads. A restart of mining activities is anticipated once the copper market improves and prices stabilize at a level that justifies a resumption of full operations. Frontera Copper's shares and two series of debentures are listed and trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbols FCC, FCC.NT, and FCC.NT.A, respectively. |
